Telling and collecting stories is something I've been doing for as long as I can remember. I have spent a lot of time escaping into fantasy or other fictional worlds, through books and with my own imagination. It was photography that taught me to appreciate the magic of the real world. Even the most 'mundane' scene can be transformed into something beautiful if you cast a different eye on it. People have often said to me that photos look better than real life but I don't think this is true; they just reveal beauty that was there all along.
I began gathering real stories: talking to people and finding out the incredible things they have experienced. Photography has brought me to meet amazing people and learn things that I may never have the chance to otherwise. I always come out of a shoot knowing my subject better than before and this is what I want my photos to show. Whether a horse, a person, a dog... each set of photos is personal and captures something of the essence of their character.
I have been around animals my whole life and have a mini-menagaerie of my own. By now they're all used to me wanting to photograph them as often as possible! I frequently find myself sitting in the evening and looking back through these photos and am amazed how they can stir up such emotion and take me back to that moment and feeling of contentment.
This is what I hope to achieve for you when photographing horses. I believe a photograph is an immortal key back to that feeling or a happy memory even when time moves on. Each animal is so unique and you should be able to look back on your photos and really feel why you fell in love with that horse in the first place.
